Afon y Dolau Gwynion Chambered Tomb

Afon y Dolau Gwynion Chambered Tomb The Afon y Dolau Gwynion Chambered Tomb was rediscovered in modern times during a Clwyd and Powys Archaeological Trust survey in 1993. It was scheduled in 1995.

The chamber lies within the remains of a 10 metres diameter round stone cairn and is aligned west north west to east south east. The portal to the tomb is located at the eastern end. A possible side chamber sits to the north.

Other features in the immediate area include a ring cairn, several cairns with evident cists and a significant 'stone setting' 100 metres west of the tomb. Although this landscape is over 400 metres above sea level, it seems it was once home to a vibrant Neolithic and Bronze Age community.

How the antiquarians of the 18th and 19th centuries missed this one beats me. It is in a rather remote spot which might explain. Not too remote though if you can get your motor up to SJ035224 where there is (limited) parking. From there a 2 kilometre moorland walk will get you to the tomb. Right to Roam access. Full hill walking kit recommended.
